The Chinese Straight Sword or 'Jian' has been used in China for more than two-thousand five-hundred years and is known as the 'Gentleman amongst weapons'. It is a spiritual weapon of honour and nobility (not a battlefield 'hack n slash' weapon like the Broad Sword). The Chen Style Straight Sword form has evolved over nineteen generations of Chen masters, themselves, the descendents of two and a half millenia of Chinese swordsmanship. It is a great honour that these skills of martial art wisdom have been shared with the West.

The Straight Sword is a great weapon to learn. The movements embolden the spirit as one learns to extend ones chi and intention beyond the confines of ones own body. The Straight Sword allows the spirit to awaken and express itself; in honour, in nobility and in justice. It is also known as the 'Sword of Wisdom' and was promoted by Lu Tung Pin (one of the 'Eight Taoist Immortals') as being not about fighting but about refining ones spirit. It is the protective sword of justice, not the aggressive sword of violence; it is the weapon of the Spiritual Warrior.

The Chen Style Straight Sword form has 50 movements and takes quite a while to learn. The power of the sword wielding comes from being fluid, relaxed, and having precise intention. Although it can be taught to beginners it can take a lifetime to master... so you may as well begin now.

Here is a photo of Grandmaster Chen Xiao Wang holding the posture called 'Diagonal Flying'. Chen Xiao Wang is the current 'Standard Bearer' of Chen Style Tai Chi Chuan and he embodies the relaxed silent power of a wise and spiritual warrior.

Straight Sword can be taught to anyone, regardless of gender or age, strong or weak; you practice it at your own level of fitness and call your internal warrior to 'wake up'.

Be strong, be honourable, be peaceful.
